About Palworld

Palworld is the rare survival game where the graphics card, not the processor, does most of the heavy lifting, and our data says that plainly. Pocketpair's creature-collecting survival sandbox launched into early access in January 2024 and immediately became one of the biggest PC launches ever recorded, peaking above two million concurrent players on Steam alone. Two and a half years later, with the full 1.0 release behind it, the player base has settled but the hardware question has not: across 3,711 measured CPU and GPU combinations in our database, the average system records 93 FPS at 1080p Ultra, 61 FPS at 1440p Ultra, and 34 FPS at 4K Ultra. The fastest builds touch 587 FPS at 1080p Low, while the slowest combinations in our data manage just 23 FPS at 1080p Ultra. That spread, roughly 25x from floor to ceiling, makes Palworld one of the more hardware-sensitive mainstream games we track, and most of that sensitivity sits squarely on the GPU.

Unreal Engine 5, and what actually limits frame rate

Palworld runs on Unreal Engine 5 with DirectX 12, and its performance profile follows the engine's modern template: heavy GPU load in the open world, a meaningful VRAM appetite at high texture settings, and a burst of shader compilation work the first time you play after an install or a driver update. In our controlled measurements the CPU is remarkably unimportant in the field. Look at the 1080p Ultra table sorted by processor and the top of the list is a flat line: a Ryzen 5 7600 averages 97 FPS, a Core i5-14400F averages 97 FPS, and the next several entries sit between 94 and 95 FPS. When mid-range chips from two different architectures land within measurement noise of each other, the processor is not the bottleneck. The graphics card explains nearly all of the variance in this game.

There is one important exception, and every long-term player knows it: bases. Palworld simulates every Pal you have assigned to work, their pathing, their tasks, their hunger, plus raid events and base structures, and that simulation runs on your CPU in single-player and co-op play. A late-game base with dozens of working Pals can drag frame rates well below what the same system holds in the open field, and no graphics setting fixes it because it is not a graphics problem. Dedicated servers offload some of this to the server process, which is one reason the community pushes multiplayer groups toward them. Memory follows a similar pattern. The game itself is comfortable in 16 GB, but large bases and long sessions push usage higher, and players building big should treat 32 GB of dual-channel DDR5 as the comfort point rather than the luxury it is in most games. Storage matters modestly: the install is around 40 GB, and an NVMe SSD shortens the already fast loads and smooths world streaming on the lowest-end systems.

1080p: a mid-range card's game

At 1920x1080, Palworld is genuinely friendly to ordinary hardware, at least by Unreal Engine 5 standards. The 93 FPS average at Ultra tells you the typical gaming PC clears the 60 FPS bar with room to spare, and the per-card numbers show how broad the comfortable zone is. A GeForce RTX 4060 averages 85 FPS at 1080p Ultra, a Radeon RX 6700 XT matches it at 86, and the newer RTX 5060 lands at 90. Step down a tier and an RX 7600 still holds 73 FPS, an Intel Arc B580 manages 69, and even the aging RTX 2060 and RX 6600 deliver 66 FPS each. The GTX 1660 SUPER, a card with no ray tracing hardware and a 2019 design, averages 55 FPS at Ultra, which means it clears 60 comfortably with one preset notch down.

The preset scaling is where 1080p gets interesting. Across all systems the averages move from 93 FPS at Ultra to 123 at High, 159 at Medium, and 194 at Low. Dropping Ultra to High alone recovers roughly a third more frame rate, and Medium nearly doubles the Ultra figure. That makes Palworld a legitimate high-refresh candidate on mid-range hardware: an RTX 4060-class card with tuned settings is a real pairing for a 144Hz monitor, and the top of our database, flagships on Low, touches 587 FPS, which is to say the engine will feed a 240Hz monitor if you give it enough card and accept lower settings. The honest caveat is the floor. The slowest combinations in our data record 23 FPS at 1080p Ultra, and those are mostly old or entry GPUs asked to run Epic-quality textures with too little VRAM. At 1080p the fix is settings discipline, not necessarily new hardware.

1440p and 4K: the GPU bill comes due

The 1440p Ultra average of 61 FPS marks the point where Palworld stops being forgiving. The typical system still holds 60, but the margin is gone, and the per-card data shows a clean split. Cards that genuinely own this resolution at Ultra are the upper mid-range and above: the RTX 4070 SUPER averages 88 FPS, the RTX 5070 manages 84, the RX 9070 XT records 77, and the RTX 4070 sits at 76. The RX 7800 XT holds 69. Below that line, the RTX 4060's 56 FPS and the Arc B580's 46 mean you are choosing between settings cuts and upscaling. Speaking of which, Palworld supports both DLSS and FSR, and at 1440p the Quality mode of either is close to free image quality, which makes an RTX 4060 or RX 7600 perfectly viable here if you use the tools the game gives you. Dropping to the High preset, which averages 81 FPS across all systems, is the other lever.

At 4K Ultra the 34 FPS average is a blunt statement: this resolution is flagship territory if you insist on maximum settings. The RTX 4080 averages 55 FPS, the RTX 4090 reaches 61, and the RTX 5090 tops our table at 63. Nothing else in the database holds 60 at 4K Ultra. The slowest systems record 7 FPS, a slideshow by any definition. The practical paths to 4K are the High preset (45 FPS average, so a strong high-end card clears 60) or upscaling, where DLSS or FSR in Quality mode on an RTX 4070 SUPER or RX 9070 XT produces a genuinely good 4K experience. Our advice matches the data: at 4K, treat Ultra as a screenshot mode. The visual difference between Ultra and High in this game is small in motion, and the frame rate difference is not.

Recommended settings: our tested configuration

Palworld's settings menu is short by modern standards, which makes optimization a quick job once you know what costs what. Start from the Ultra preset and work down in this order. Shadows first: they are one of the most expensive options and one of the least visible during actual play, and Low shadows alone recover a measurable chunk of frame rate. View distance second: Medium costs you some far-field Pal and resource visibility, which matters for gameplay, so test it before committing; if you hunt rare spawns at range, keep this at High and cut elsewhere. Grass detail and effects quality can both drop a notch with little visible loss in motion. Motion blur off, always. Anti-aliasing is worth keeping, since the game's soft TAA-style presentation gets genuinely blurry without some form of it, but if you enable DLSS or FSR the upscaler's own reconstruction handles this job. On texture quality specifically: if your card has 8 GB of VRAM or less, cap this a step below Epic. Texture streaming stutter on a VRAM-limited card is the single most common avoidable problem in this game. The combined profile, shadows Low, view distance Medium or High, grass and effects one notch down, upscaling on Quality at 1440p and above, tracks closely with our High preset numbers, which means roughly 30 percent more performance than Ultra for an image that is difficult to tell apart in play. Finally, cap your frame rate a few frames below your system's average. Palworld's frame pacing is good but not perfect, and a capped 141 FPS feels better than an uncapped figure oscillating between 120 and 160.

What hardware do you need?

Entry level (GTX 1660 SUPER, RX 6600, older 6-core CPU, 16 GB RAM): Expect 55 to 66 FPS at 1080p Ultra in our data, which becomes a locked-feeling 60-plus at High. This tier plays the entire game comfortably at 1080p and should not attempt 1440p without aggressive settings cuts and upscaling. If you are planning a budget gaming PC build for Palworld specifically, an RX 6600-class card is the floor we would recommend, and it is a surprisingly low floor for a UE5 title.

Mid-range (RTX 4060, RTX 5060, RX 6700 XT, modern 6-core, 16 GB RAM): The sweet spot. 85 to 97 FPS at 1080p Ultra, high-refresh 1080p with tuned settings, and 60-plus at 1440p with the High preset or upscaling. This is where price-to-performance peaks for this game, and where the best graphics card for Palworld for most buyers lives.

High-end (RTX 4070 SUPER, RX 9070 XT, RTX 4080): 133 to 150 FPS at 1080p Ultra, 88 to 99 at 1440p Ultra, and 4K becomes genuinely usable at High or with upscaling. Buy this tier if you own a 1440p high-refresh display or a 4K screen.

Flagship (RTX 4090, RTX 5090): 61 to 66 FPS at 4K Ultra, triple-digit 4K with tuning, and the only hardware that approaches the game's 587 FPS ceiling at 1080p Low. Worth it for 4K native or 240Hz play, overkill for everything else, because Palworld simply does not have a use for this much card at 1080p.

Laptop playability

Gaming laptops handle Palworld about as well as their desktop counterparts' names suggest, with the usual thermal caveats. A mobile RTX 4060 or 4070 sits comfortably in the mid-range tier above: 1080p Ultra at high frame rates, 1440p with upscaling. The two laptop-specific warnings are RAM and cooling. Thin-and-light machines with 16 GB shared between system and a hungry UE5 title will feel it in long sessions at large bases, and sustained GPU load in a survival game is exactly the workload that exposes weak cooling. Integrated graphics are a different conversation: modern Radeon 780M-class iGPUs run the game at 720p Low in the 25 to 35 FPS range, which is playable in the way a long flight is playable, and Steam Deck owners report a similar 30 to 45 FPS with tuned settings. It works. It is not the way to first experience the game if you have any other option.

Streaming and content creation

Palworld's GPU-bound profile makes it one of the easiest survival games to broadcast well, because the encoding question has a clean answer. Use the hardware encoder. NVENC on NVIDIA cards and AMF on AMD cards cost essentially nothing in frame rate here, produce a clean 1080p60 stream, and leave the CPU free for the Pal simulation that actually needs it. CPU x264 encoding is the wrong choice for this game specifically: the quality gain over modern hardware encoders is small at streaming bitrates, and the encoding threads compete directly with the base simulation for processor time, which means dropped frames exactly when your base is busiest and your stream is most interesting. A basic streaming setup, single PC, NVENC at 6 to 8 Mbps, capped in-game frame rate, handles Palworld without drama. For the creators cutting Palworld footage into longer videos, the same GPU-first logic carries over: a card that is strong in this game also accelerates timeline scrubbing and export in the major editors, so the video editing and gaming workloads on a Palworld machine point at the same component. One machine, one upgrade, both jobs.

Common problems and fixes

Stuttering in the first minutes after launch, then fine: UE5 shader compilation. This is normal engine behavior after an install, patch, or driver update. Let the game run for 10 to 15 minutes before judging performance, and keep GPU drivers current.

Great FPS in the field, bad FPS at your base: Pal AI and base simulation on the CPU. No graphics setting touches this. Reduce the number of working Pals, spread production across multiple bases instead of one mega-base, and on your own server hardware consider a dedicated server so the simulation runs off your game machine.

Hitching and stutter with Epic textures on an 8 GB card: VRAM overflow. Drop texture quality one step and the problem disappears. Budget at least 6 GB of VRAM at 1440p in our experience, 8 GB or more for comfort.

Rubber banding and lag on multiplayer servers: Almost always network or server tick, not your hardware. Palworld dedicated servers vary wildly in quality; a server at capacity stutters for everyone on it regardless of client specs.

Gradual slowdown over a very long session: Memory pressure. The game leaks toward high RAM usage over multi-hour sessions on 16 GB systems. A restart every few hours restores minimums, and 32 GB largely removes the issue.

Blurry image: Check that the in-game resolution matches your display's native resolution, and if you disabled anti-aliasing entirely, turn it back on or enable upscaling. Palworld without any AA is noticeably soft.

Upgrade priorities for Palworld players

Palworld inverts the usual survival-game upgrade order, and getting this right saves real money. First, the graphics card: in a game where the top CPUs in our database sit within 3 FPS of each other at 1080p Ultra, a CPU upgrade is the lowest-value move you can make for field performance, while one GPU tier up is worth 20 to 30 percent instantly. Second, memory, but only if you build big: if your gameplay is huge bases with armies of working Pals, moving to 32 GB of dual-channel DDR5 helps both the simulation load and the long-session slowdowns. If you roam more than you build, skip this. Third, storage: the game is about 40 GB and belongs on an NVMe SSD, which is a cheap fix for streaming hitches on older SATA or hard-drive installs. Fourth, and last, the processor, and only for the dedicated base builders and server hosts. Everyone else should spend that money on the GPU. Most Palworld performance complaints we see trace back to an unbalanced build that did this order backwards.

The hardware story is refreshingly one-dimensional compared to its peers: buy the best GPU your budget allows, keep 16 GB or more of RAM, put the game on an SSD, and you have covered nearly everything the engine asks for.
