Rockstar's western epic is demanding in a way that rewards understanding rather than brute force: across more than 3,700 measured CPU and GPU combinations in our database, the average system records 54 FPS at 1080p Ultra, 41 FPS at 1440p Ultra, and 27 FPS at 4K Ultra. Those averages span everything from legacy rigs to flagships, and the spread between them is wide, the fastest combinations exceed 600 FPS at 1080p Low while the slowest crawl at 14 FPS at Ultra. Few games reward smart settings as richly as this one.

An engine built for beauty, tuned for patience

RDR2 runs on an evolved version of Rockstar's RAGE engine, and its priorities are visible in every frame: draw distance, volumetric fog and clouds, physically accurate lighting, and dense environmental detail come first, and performance comes second. The result is an engine that scales honestly, every preset reduction returns real frame rate, but that never becomes truly light. The load splits tellingly between components. The graphics card carries the bulk of the work at Ultra, particularly the volumetrics and advanced lighting that define the game's look. The processor matters mostly in towns and busy scenes, where NPC density and physics push single-thread load; Saint Denis is the benchmark's benchmark, the place where weaker CPUs show their limits regardless of GPU. And memory speed plays a quiet role: the engine streams enormous texture sets continuously, so fast RAM and ample VRAM smooth out the minimums that averages don't show.

1080p: the sweet spot for smart settings

At 1920x1080, the 54 FPS average at Ultra means a typical mid-range build from recent years lands just under the 60 FPS line with everything maxed, tantalizingly close. The game offers dozens of individual options, and they are wildly unequal in cost: water physics, volumetric quality, and reflection quality each cost double-digit percentages of frame rate, while texture quality costs almost nothing on any card with sufficient VRAM. Gaming laptops run RDR2 well within their class, mobile upper-tier cards handle 1080p optimized settings comfortably, and the game's cinematic pace is forgiving of frame rates in the 40s that would feel worse in a shooter. Thin-and-light machines and integrated graphics are a different story: the latest Core Ultra and Ryzen AI integrated GPUs can run the game at low settings and reduced resolution, but this is one of the titles where the gap between integrated and discrete graphics is most obvious. Entry level (older quad-core, 4-6 GB card): 1080p Medium at 35-50 FPS in our lower-percentile data. RDR2's deliberate pacing makes this more playable than the number suggests, a stable 40 with good frame pacing is a fine way to experience the story, and it remains the classic "does my old PC still have it" test.

Mid-range (modern 6-core, upper-mid GPU): the recommended tier. 1080p optimized-High at 70-90 FPS, 1440p optimized at 60+ with upscaling. This is where the game's beauty and smoothness first fully coexist.

High-end: 1440p High at 90-120 FPS, 4K optimized at 60-75 FPS with upscaling. Volumetrics can return to High at this tier, the one setting worth upgrading for.

Flagship: 4K near-Ultra at 80+ FPS with DLSS/FSR Quality, the full cinematic showcase. Only here does maxed volumetrics stop being a meaningful sacrifice.

Streaming and content creation

RDR2 is a cinematographer's game, its vistas and photo mode make it a staple of gaming video content, and it streams well within limits. The GPU-side load is the consideration: at 1440p the card works hard, so hardware encoding (NVENC or AMF) is the right choice, costing only a few percent of frame rate for clean 1080p60 or 1440p60 output. CPU x264 encoding is viable on 8-core-and-better processors since the game leaves some multi-core headroom outside of towns, and the quality gain matters for a game this visual. For cinematic content creators, the practical tip from our data: capture at 4K with tuned settings even if you play at 1440p, the game's slow camera work forgives the lower capture frame rate, and the downscaled footage is noticeably sharper.

Common problems and fixes

Stuttering in Saint Denis and Valentine: CPU load from NPC density, not GPU. Lower crowd-adjacent settings (level of detail, physics), and accept that weak quad-cores will always struggle in towns, the engine demands it.

Texture pop-in and hitching on rides: VRAM or storage streaming. On 6 GB cards, drop textures one notch; on hard drives, the game belongs on an SSD, its 120 GB of streaming assets punish spinning disks.

Upgrade priorities for RDR2 players

If your numbers fall short, RDR2's upgrade order is more conventional than most games in our library, but with one trap. First, the graphics card: at Ultra settings and any resolution above 1080p, the GPU does nearly all the talking, and a stronger card is the direct path to higher frame rates. Second, memory and storage together: 16 GB of RAM and an NVMe SSD smooth the texture streaming that causes hitching on lesser systems, and both are inexpensive fixes with outsized effect on consistency. Third, the processor, but only if yours is genuinely weak, because RDR2's CPU demands are modest outside of towns; a modern 6-core is enough, and CPU upgrades beyond that buy little. The trap is spending on the processor first for a game that is GPU-limited almost everywhere that matters: if Saint Denis stutters, that is a CPU issue, but if the whole game runs slowly, the card is the answer.
