Rate My PC answers the question every PC owner eventually asks, how good is my computer, really, with a number that means something specific. Select your processor and graphics card above and the tool scores the pairing against every component in our benchmark database: more than 3,400 CPUs and 2,700 GPUs tested with PassMark, Cinebench, Geekbench, and 3DMark. The result is a percentile, not an abstract score. A rating of 70 means your build outperforms seventy percent of all the hardware we track. A rating of 90 puts you inside the top tenth of everything measured. It is the fastest honest assessment of a gaming PC, workstation, or laptop available anywhere on this site, and it takes about five seconds.

What the percentile actually tells you

Raw benchmark scores are hard to interpret, is a Cinebench R23 multi-core result of 28,000 good?, because the scale has no intuitive top. Percentiles fix that by ranking your hardware against the entire history of tested parts, from decade-old budget chips to current flagships. A processor at the 50th percentile is exactly mid-pack: half of everything ever benchmarked is slower. At the 75th percentile you have genuinely strong hardware that will handle any modern workload. Above the 90th, you are in enthusiast territory where further upgrades produce diminishing returns almost by definition. The same logic applies to graphics cards, where the percentile also predicts which monitor resolution your card can comfortably drive, a detail the tool spells out alongside the score.

The number that matters more: your bottleneck

The overall rating is the headline, but the balance analysis underneath it is where the tool earns its keep. Every build has a limiting component, and identifying it correctly is the difference between an upgrade that transforms your machine and one that wastes several hundred dollars. The tool compares your CPU and GPU percentiles directly. When they sit within roughly twenty points of each other, the build is balanced, both components work at their potential. When the gap widens beyond that, the weaker component throttles the stronger one: a flagship graphics card behind a budget quad-core spends its time waiting for frames to be prepared, while a top-tier processor behind an entry-level GPU has rendering power it can never use. The most productive way to use Rate My PC is to test hypothetical upgrades before buying them. Score your current build first and note both the percentile and the bottleneck side. Then rescore with the component you are considering. If your bottleneck is the GPU and a new card lifts the build from the 55th to the 80th percentile, the upgrade is real. If the same new card barely moves the number because your processor is the limiting factor, you have just saved yourself from an expensive mistake, the CPU, the platform, or nothing at all was the right purchase. Gaming, work, and everything between

A single rating serves different purposes depending on what the machine does. For gaming, the percentile maps neatly onto expectations: builds above the 60th percentile drive comfortable 1080p gaming in modern titles, the 75th and above handles 1440p at high settings, and 4K with ray tracing is the preserve of the top decile. For content creation, video editing, 3D rendering, photo work, the CPU percentile deserves the first look, since encodes and renders scale with processor throughput. For software development, both matter in different proportions: compilation loves cores, while emulators, containers, and local AI tools increasingly lean on the GPU. And for a home office or student machine, the rating is mostly a reassurance: anything above the 40th percentile will feel responsive for years of documents, browsers, and calls.

Desktop and laptop ratings are kept honest

Laptops complicate hardware ratings because the same component name hides different performance. A mobile graphics card runs at a fraction of its desktop sibling's power budget, and a thin ultrabook's processor sustains lower clocks than a gaming laptop's identical chip. The tool accounts for this by scoring mobile and desktop variants as separate entries with their own measured histories. When you select a laptop CPU or GPU, the percentile is computed against the field it actually competes in, so a rating for a gaming laptop reflects its real standing, not a flattering comparison against hardware it could never match. That distinction matters most when shopping: two laptops with identical spec sheets can sit fifteen percentile points apart.

Desktop builds: the classic rating ladder

Desktop machines are the easiest to read because their power budgets are honest. A rating above 90 puts a build in apex territory, the class that plays everything at 4K Ultra and still has headroom; 70 to 90 is the high-end tier, fluent at 1440p Ultra or 4K High; 50 to 70 is the midrange sweet spot where most gamers actually live, strong at 1080p Ultra and 1440p with tuned settings; 30 to 50 is entry level, comfortable in esports titles and older games; below 30 is legacy hardware, still useful for a defined library but past upgrading around. Because the score blends both components, a build can land in a tier two ways: balanced parts, or one strong part carrying one weak one. The bottleneck line on the results page tells you which, and that distinction is the difference between a build that upgrades well and one that has a ceiling.

Laptop builds: reading the score against the power budget

Laptops rate on the same scale, but the number deserves context. Mobile processors and graphics run inside tight thermal envelopes, so a laptop scoring 65 is a genuinely different machine from a desktop scoring 65: the laptop achieves it with remarkable efficiency, the desktop achieves it with brute force and can sustain it indefinitely under sustained load. For laptop owners the most useful part of the rating is the upgrade verdict, because laptops rarely allow component swaps: the tool's recommendation shifts from upgrade this part to adjust settings to fit, and the measured per-game data shows exactly which settings buy the most frame rate back on that specific machine. Gaming laptops, desktop-replacement class machines with full-power mobile graphics, score close to their desktop counterparts and are rated accordingly.

What to do with the verdict

A rating is only useful if it changes a decision, and there are three decisions it serves. Buying: rate the build you are considering before you pay for it, since the tool accepts any processor and graphics card, including ones you do not own. Upgrading: the bottleneck analysis converts the score into a direction, naming the component whose replacement moves the number most, and the comparison pages quantify the candidate upgrades before you spend. Keeping: a large share of machines that get rated here discover they are better than assumed, with a library of smoothly playable games already installed and waiting.
